If you feel like your being taken advantage of then you probably are. Nothing makes a job miserable faster than a bad boss—particularly the kind who has no qualms overworking the staff. Sure, sometimes you’re going to be asked to go above and beyond your duties, and you’ll have to comply because that’s just part of being a team player. But feeling unappreciated or like you’re constantly being taken advantage of is absolutely not in anyone’s job description. A good boss knows the motivating power of recognition and should be acknowledging you both one-on-one and in group settings.

Many managers are short-staffed, and if they don’t have the ability to bring on more employees, they tend to take advantage unknowingly maybe sometimes knowingly of the employees they do have. One way to know weather or not you feel taken advantage of is the tactics they may use to get you to go above and beyond. Incentive? Maybe it they deliver on their promise.

If your manager repeatedly promises that a pay raise or even a promotion to “ lead Sonographer” or supervisor is around the corner but doesn’t deliver, you’re getting jerked around, And if you wait to address the issue, you could be hurting your long-term earning potential, since your next job offer will probably be based on the salary at your current job.

Do you have the misfortune of working for a “praise thief”—a manager who steals credit you’re your ideas? Reclaiming ownership will enable you to gain visibility within the company and make a good impression on the higher ups, which can potentially lead to a job opportunity in another department (away from your boss).

A few years back I worked as the technical director at two cardiology offices. I was hired into an empty department and left to figure it out. Literally! I started these offices before they were even open to get them up and running successfully. From the Ultrasound equipment, to the PACS system, to the schedule…and so on…they put me there and then left me to figure it out! The kicker was when it was all said and done…the practice administrator took all the credit! For book purposes I will call her Alex. You know the one I’m speaking about, the devil in the dress from the movie Fatal Attraction. Que the gasp, but I’m not kidding! You’ll read more about Alex and her “close to bunny boiling” moments in my upcoming book!

Advocacy.. Changing what is into what should be.

If you ever have been told that if you have any problems you can always go to Human Resources. They even encourage it in fact. Most of the time even tell you that you can state your case as an anonymous.  Any of us who have been around awhile know that it’s all a crock. …

Leaders who don’t listen will eventually be surrounded by people who have nothing to say

You know how they say you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince? Well the same concept applies in the work place only PLEASE don’t “ kiss your boss” or their ass. Let’s just say I have a diverse background that I consider a journey. Well on that journey everyone has…

Can’t We All Just Get Along

I don’t know what it is about nurses that they have such animosity toward sonographers. Some might say that jealousy plays a role, or that it could  be they feel superior to us.  They may tend to think they make more money than us, but honestly the salary ranges are very close and could also…

Does Your Manager Know Ultrasound?

I don’t know who thought it would be a good idea to put a manager over an ultrasound department when they have absolutely no ultrasound background.  Not only is that manager set up for failure but the employees who are frustrated will feel as if they are not appreciated which can turn a department into…

Let’s Talk About Change

Every organization endures periods of change. Maybe it’s due to reorganization or perhaps you had to replace a departing superstar or cut your team because of budgetary constraints. The reason for the change doesn’t matter if a crucial element is missing: trust. Without trust, avenues of communication experience gridlock. Collaboration ends up stifled and stilted.…

Is Right Wrong? No Just Indifferent

I have been a right handed sonographer for over fifteen years. I started out doing general and cross trained into cardiac. I have never sat down and scanned I have always stood up while the patient laid on their left side and their whole body was as close to me as possible and the machine…

Travel Sonographer’s Encounter Drama Llama’s

My last blog was about what to expect with Travel Sonography so today I want to go into more about how to treat and how your treated when you go into a facility during your travel job. We are taught at a young age to “treat people how you want to be treated” but I…

Travel Sonographers Take The High Road

Being a traveling sonographer is not for everyone.  You may elect to take long or short term assignments and have the flexibility to take time off when you want to .  I have completed two travel positions for hospitals, this by far does not make me an expert on travel sonography I just wanted to share my…
