Does Your Manager Know Ultrasound?
I don’t know who thought it would be a good idea to put a manager over an ultrasound department when they have absolutely no ultrasound background. Not only is that manager set up for failure but the employees who are frustrated will feel as if they are not appreciated which can turn a department into dysfunction. Employees yearn for managers who are leaders; Managers who possess high emotional intelligence and will put people first. How can you put people first when you don’t understand the pain points of the job? Many managers are focused on climbing the corporate ladder and achieving goals, no matter what the cost to employees. In order for managers to climb the ladder, they feel like or are told they have to show they are making the company money which unfortunately for sonographers this means producing high volume. Since a manager over a department does not practice ultrasound they are unable to help pump out the high volume of patients they are allowing to be squeezed in a day. They are unwilling to listen to the burnt out sonographer’s opinions on suggested guidelines that have been put in place for reasons suggesting quality over quantity.
Employees don’t leave bad jobs, they leave bad bosses! Most of the time an employee has an issue with a company, it has to do with something related to their boss. At the heart of the breakdown of the manager-employee relationship, lies a lack of trust, respect, and empathy. When you go beyond the call of duty for your employer, and they respond with insensitivity and inflexibility during your time of need, the relationship at that exact moment is lost.
A recent study says that 56% of employees would turn down a 10% raise to stay with a great boss. Most companies don’t currently think about great managers as a benefit or publicize that benefit to prospective employees, but this is the best incentive in retaining good employees. All the money or benefits in the world will not retain good staff if they have a bad boss who makes their time on work miserable. They want to work in a healthy environment with a boss who looks out for them. It’s time that companies realize that all the money or perks, will not retain good staff if they have a bad boss. A good boss is without a doubt, one of the best incentives for keeping staff, happy and engaged.
